Mining Engineering

Overview and Mission

The Department of Mining Engineering at Injibara University is committed to producing highly skilled, ethically conscious, and technologically competent mining engineers. Located in the resource-rich region of Awi Zone, the department plays a crucial role in supporting the sustainable development of Ethiopia’s mineral and energy sectors.

Mission: To deliver quality, internationally recognized education, conduct demand-driven research in mining technology, and provide effective community service and consultancy to promote safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible mineral extraction.

Academic Programs

The department currently offers:

Undergraduate Program (BSc): Mining Engineering

The curriculum is designed to balance theoretical knowledge with practical skills, focusing on core areas essential for both surface and underground operations.

Key Areas of Focus and Specialization

  • The department emphasizes practical skills critical to the local and national mining industry. Core educational streams include:
  • Mine Design and Planning: Optimization of open-pit and underground mine layouts, ventilation systems, and life-of-mine scheduling.
  • Mineral Processing Engineering: Efficiency studies in comminution (crushing and grinding), separation techniques (flotation, gravity concentration), and tailings management.
  • Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering: Analysis of rock mass stability, ground control techniques, and slope stability analysis for safe operations.
  • Mine Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE): Focus on sustainable development, mine closure planning, environmental impact assessment, and adherence to national and international safety standards
